ZEISS DuraVision Platinum vs Silver vs Chrome: Which Coating Is Worth It?

Varadero Capri gold titanium eyeglasses with ZEISS DuraVision anti-reflective prescription lenses

Short answer: DuraVision Plus Chrome is enough for most people. Silver with BlueGuard suits screen-heavy days, and Platinum earns its price for night drivers, higher prescriptions and anyone who is hard on their glasses. The coating is the part of your lenses you notice every single day. It decides how much glare bounces back at you, how often you clean your glasses, and how quickly they start to look scratched. ZEISS calls its coating family DuraVision, and as an authorized ZEISS retailer we offer three of its tiers on every pair of Varadero eyeglasses. As a licensed optician, here's what each one actually does, and who should spend the extra.

ZEISS DuraVision tiers at a glance

Varadero tier ZEISS coating Price Best for
Standard Non-Glare DuraVision Plus Chrome Included Most people, most of the time
Blue Light Non-Glare DuraVision Plus Silver with BlueGuard +$120 Long screen days, if you want less blue-light glare
Premium Non-Glare DuraVision Plus Platinum +$200 Night drivers, high prescriptions, and anyone hard on their glasses

DuraVision Plus Chrome: the coating most people need

Chrome is a genuine anti-reflective coating, not a token one. It cuts the reflections that make lenses look shiny in photos and cause halos around headlights. It also resists scratches and smudges, and according to ZEISS it cleans up to three times faster. It includes UV protection from all sides. That's why we include it at no charge. If you've only ever worn uncoated lenses, Chrome alone will feel like a clear upgrade. (New to coatings? Start with is anti-glare coating worth it?)

DuraVision Plus Silver with BlueGuard: for screen-heavy days

Silver adds two things:

  • BlueGuard material. BlueGuard filters part of the blue light from screens and LED lighting inside the lens itself, rather than bouncing it off the surface. That's why it doesn't show the strong blue sheen of reflective blue coatings.
  • Fewer reflections. ZEISS rates Silver at up to 50% fewer reflections than a standard anti-reflective coating.

Be realistic about what blue-light filtering does. It reduces blue-light glare; it isn't a medical treatment, and I explain the evidence in do blue light glasses work? If screens bother you, Silver is a comfortable choice. If they don't, Chrome or Platinum will serve you better for the money.

DuraVision Plus Platinum: our premium tier

Platinum is ZEISS's premium everyday coating:

  • Up to 50% fewer reflections, so the lens nearly disappears on your face and in photos.
  • Superior durability, meaning more resistance to the fine scratches that build up over a year of wear.
  • Cleans up to three times faster, with UV protection from all sides.

Is DuraVision Platinum worth it?

For three kinds of wearer, yes:

  1. Night drivers. Fewer reflections means less halo and glare around headlights and streetlights.
  2. Higher prescriptions. Thicker lenses reflect more, so the reduction is more visible. That goes double if you're also choosing high-index material.
  3. People who are hard on their glasses. If your lenses usually look hazy by month eight, the extra durability pays for itself.

If none of those describe you, Chrome is a perfectly good coating, and I'd rather you put the money toward the right lens material.

What about DuraVision Gold and BlueProtect?

ZEISS also makes DuraVision Plus Gold and DuraVision Plus BlueProtect, and we don't currently offer either. BlueProtect reflects blue light off the lens surface, which gives it a light blue sheen. Our blue-light option uses BlueGuard, which filters inside the lens instead.

Can I get these coatings on prescription sunglasses?

Prescription sunglasses work differently. The front of the lens is tinted, so only the back surface needs anti-reflective treatment. On our prescription sunglasses, we offer a Backside Non-Glare coating (+$75) that stops sunlight from bouncing off the inside of the lens into your eyes.

Both cut reflections and are easy to clean. Silver adds BlueGuard blue-light filtering in the lens material. Platinum focuses on maximum clarity and durability, with superior scratch resistance.

Which ZEISS coating is best?

Of the three we offer, Platinum has the best clarity and durability. The best one for you depends on how you use your glasses: Chrome for everyday wear, Silver for long screen days, Platinum for night driving and higher prescriptions.

Yes. Chrome is a full ZEISS anti-reflective coating with scratch and smudge resistance and UV protection. It's the tier we include with every pair.
